ABOUT US
Hi there! We are EZ-EKG and we are Biomedical Engineering students at Georgia Tech creating one solution to a couple of big problems in healthcare: Healthcare Associated Infections and cable management.

Electro Cardiomyography, or ECG (also known as EKG), is used by physicians to monitor cardiac activity using electrical signals. It is used to identify arrhythmia, diagnose hypertension, and diagnose heart attacks. ECG cables can actually cause problems in healthcare environments when not managed correctly. The improper cleaning of ECG cables and leadwires can result in patients getting hospital acquired infections (HAIs).
According to a study done by GMS Hygiene and Infection Control on 400 ECG wires from ICU and PACU, “51.4% of the ECG lead wires that had reportedly already been cleaned contained >30 CFUs/mL sample of bacteria or risk pathogens.” The resulting costs of HAI to U.S. hospitals range from $35.7 to $45 billion dollars per year according to the CDC (CDC, 2009). Having a way to keep the cables off of the floor and also clean the cables as they enter and exit the housing will reduce the risk of HAIs for patients in Intensive care units and Emergency Departments, resulting in lower yearly costs to hospitals.
Our EZEKG device is unique to solutions currently offered in healthcare as we include a cable management system as well as a cleaning mechanism that removes debris such as blood and dirt from the cables as it passes through the input of the cable housing. Our device creates value by reducing the risk of hospital acquired infections and potential hazards for both the user and the patient.
